    Corvette Central dist rebuild service

My 66 distributor needs to be rebuilt. Lower bushing and shaft shot.
While looking thru the vendor catalogs I noticed Corvette Central offers a rebuld service; $279 includes main shaft, upper and lower bushings and needle bearing cross gear. Has anyone used this service with good results?

Personally, I would encourage you to do it yourself. Look at the major vendors for the parts and check the tool sections for the instalation tools to insert the bushings. You could probably improvise them though. Reshim the distributor shaft and put a felt oil pad in the top. Sometime the little plastic washer is trashed but you can buy all of that stuff from the venders. It would be a fun project. Hardest part is just driving the role pin out the bottom of the shaft. Just doing that will make an nice improvement in idle. Regards, Terry

be certain to dril and install the small plastic mushroom? button that takes up the wear in the dist main body. this area wears away from the cross gear rubbing the main body of dist. after years of use. if you put in all new pieces and neglect the plastic button or mushroom, the new gears will go south in a heartbeat and you'll be out the cost of new main shaft and cross gear. believe there was an atricle in Restorer years ago on this topic. can't remember the fool who wrote the article, might have been ole # 14. hollar if ya can't find the article and i'll post details later. agree ya ought to do it yourself. under a hundred bucks for new mainshaft and cross gear and bushing last time i rebuilt one. mike

How do you get the old lower bushing out and the new one in?

How do you get to the upper bushing?
