Hope it's ok to ask a non Corvete Chevy question since many members seem to be knowledgeable about other models. Would like to track down my first car 73 Nova 2DR Coupe and all I have is paper key tag showing last 4 numbers of serial #. Is this enough to determine full VIN # to begin search? Car had 350/2bbl with 3sp floor shift if this helps in VIN codes. Any ideas appreciated.

Re: 73 Chevy VIN #

Well, we can get most of it from what you've described. Here's how it would have been with the "#" signs being the uncertain characters of the sequence and the "-" sign being for the last four characters that you have.
1X27H3#1#----
The first # sign could be either an "L" or a "W" depending upon whether the car was built at Willow Run, MI or Los Angeles, CA. Where you purchased the car NEW could be a "hint" as to which plant it was built at, but there are many reasons that a car from either plant could have been delivered anywhere in the country.
The second # sign would be the first digit of the build sequence at whichever plant it was built. You might be able to infer this or, at least, narrow it down to 2 possible characters if you know when in the model year that the car was built.
With the information which you have, I think that this is the best that could be done.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
