    Underside paint for C1

Ok... another question for the experts. How far does the blackout paint extend on the underside of the spare tire compartment on a C1? As I'm cleaning the underside of my 59, it's hard to distinguish between 45 years of crud and the cheap asphalt paint that the General used (both come off with laquer thinner!) Does it go up the sides of the compartment? How about extending towards the rear (which would be directly in front of where the rear bumpers mount)?

Kevin - Pretend you have a spray gun in your hand - and you are about at eye level with the front or rear wheel well opening. You pull the trigger and wand the gun from side to side and slightly up and down for a couple seconds and then wait for the next body to come down the line. Your goal is to make it so that, when fully assembled, you don't see any bare fiberglass in the wheel well opening when looking at the car from most normal viewing angles. Any more paint used than that will be a waste of paint and your effort per body. I believe it was as simple as that.

      Dennis,

I follow you. Good advice for the wheel wells. Was this same technique used at the back for the bottom of the spare tire compartment?

        Hi Kevin,
I am far from an expert but I just looked under my 58, it looks like the overspray covered the spare tire well, except behind the rear bumper mount where it is turquiose. The turquiose stops just under that rear bumper mount, an ever so slight overspray of blue on the side of my rear tires. These cars must have flown down the line, a real lick & promise job.(LOL)I hope this helps.
        Happy new year,
        Deb

Thanks Debra, that helps. Does the black just cover the bottom of the spare tire well, or does it go up the sides as well?

It goes up the sides as well. It goes all the way to where the screws are coming down through the trunk & back toward the bumpers above the rear bracket.
Below the rear bracket, back toward the bumpers the fiberglass is the same color as the car.
            Cheers,
