    C1 Front A-Arms

How do you know that your A-Arms are good and properly indexed? I would hate to get into my new rebuild and find that the bushings don't torque. Or, is this how you find out that an A-Arm isn't any good? And, is "indexing" simply making sure both sides of the A-Arm are equally positioned on the shaft(s) as the bushing is threaded on?

Yes have both A-Arms equally positioned on the shafts as you threaded them on.
Only if the A-arms holes are worn to large or bent, would they be no good.

if your a-arms are shot, they can be found on 49 to 54 chevy pass cars. mike

Thanks Guys. After cleaning things for six years I am finally trying to get my nerve up to start putting things back together. I cannot imagine all the questions that are going to cause me to doubt my abilities. Seemed so simple taking things apart-- Bill

bill: i relate to your delemma. i 've disssembled and re-assembled so many c-1 and c-2's i thnik i could do one of em in my sleep. however, i'm currently reassembling a 31 chev cabriolet, my first venture into the strange, yet simplistic world of the early chevys. we corvetters have a distinct advantage in that there are countless manuals and this forum to answer the unknown. not so with the early chevys--manuals are almost non-existant. good luck with the reassembly and feel free to use this forum. mike

...the "indexing" is slightly more complicated than I wish it was. Yes, centering is the first obvious part of it. However, it is when you start to screw the nuts onto the shafts and through the A-arms that trouble can crop up. The inner and outher threads on the nut must engage the shaft without cross threading into the A-arm. The first nust will usually go on quite easily - its the opposite end that often tries to cause trouble. The C-1 Service Manual covers the subject pretty well. I would study it before and during assembly. It even contains a few good tricks to get it done right with out screwing up your A-arms. Good Luck, Dennis

Dennis, exactly! My upper arms are pretty worn in the thread area. Just by sight they don't appear to be great candidates although most of my components don't appear to have ever been exposed to RUST--darn it. What bothers me is that I can start one bushing and it "runs" pretty easily half way through the threads before it "resists" threading. Then, the other side might have difficulty starting from the very beginning. As far as knowing if I am cross-threaded, I am not sure my arms have enought real thread to know? Guess I will just do my best and make a novice's determination as I draw things tight. Thanks for the help. Bill
