    C1 Carpet Insulation

Looking for something to put under the carpet on my '62 to cut down on the heat. Noise insulation is always nice too. The car will not be judged, but I don't want it to look like the Michelin man. From the archives it appears there are the following choices and considerations.

    1. Dynamat. Nice stuff, but expensive. Thin and molds well to angled surfaces. Adhesive built in.

    2. Dynamat clones on EBay. Not as expensive. ? quality. Adhesive built in.

    3. Foil backed insulation from Lowes or Home Depot. Maybe too thick to fit under carpet. Does not mold to surfaces. Adhesive needs to be applied.

Seeing that we drive our `62 and it does sometimes get wet(especially on Road Tours). Even on the inside. I first poured a cup of water on the bare floor to see where the water ran to. At the deepest spot I drilled(yes drilled) a hole to let the water out. Next I put down the type of floor runner that has nubs on it, nub side down in the foot well. You can also punch holes in the floor runner for water drainage. Next I put down a layer of 1/8 inch white closed cell foam pad. Finally the carpet over top. Now I do not have soaken wet carpet for days, It is quieter, and also the floor is not hot.

How much heat are you talking? I drive my 62 in Northern Ohio all summer and don't get enough heat through the floor to worry about. As for the noise, part of the fun in driving a C1 is being able to hear it, something you can't do with new cars. Maybe I'm missing the point here, but when I want to drive a "cool quiet" car I jump in the wife's land yacht. Just my 2 cents.

        Chris:
I know this is a little late, but J.C. Whitney sells an ashphalt based sound panel deadener (12" x 12" sheets) that work very well. Not a high priced recognized brand name like the dynamat, but sticks well, forms to curved surfaces, really makes those thin fiberglass panels sound more solid with less vibration. I have used this on several cars with good success on floor boards, inside door panels, and even behind the seats and inside the gas tank compartment. If the weather is cold, you may have to warm em up, but otherwise they handle very well.
