    c3 fender emblems

My 70 Vette is missing the Stingray fender emblems. I see 3 pin and 4 pin emblems on ebay. Both say they are for 69-78 Vetts. The assembly manual I have shows 4 holes. Does the three pin just use three of the same four holes that the pin embles uses?
I would also like help on locating the emblem in reference to the side vents. Does anyone have a template with hole locations? The assembly manual shows some dementions, but it unclear what the reference location is.

Are the location holes not INSIDE your fender for location? The Original stingray Badge has long 4-pins. Repro pins are much shorter. On repro's, the "I" on the word has a horizontal line below it, very noticable. Originals don't. There should be a thin foam pad between the badge and the surface. They way the black paint around the letters is done is also different. Want more?

No there are no holes. The car looks like it was never hit, however since there are no holes I am not sure. The seller gave me pictures of when it was striped to the glass and repainted. It looked all original (gray glass, all bonding strips, no repair patches, it looks good from underneath, no evidense of frame damage, all the original 1970 grill trim and etc). At first I though that when he repainted it he filled the holes and left the emblems off. Later I looked for the holes from under the hood and can not see any.
I would like to put emblems back on and mostly only see three pin emblems on ebay. I am not that fussy that they have to be the "originals", but I want to at least have the correct replacemebts. I also have the assembly manual that looks like it gives the info to locate the holes, but I can not understand where the reference points are. Does someone have a template that shows an obvious location such as the side vent?

Happen to be in the garage. Here's a reference for the rear hole, drivers side. If you take off the eggcrate grill, there's 2 large rivets running vertically at at the rear of the grill opening. I ran a line vertically through the center of the 2 rivets and projected it a good 6 or 7 " beyond the upper edge of the grill opening. I then used a right triangle, (anything with a right angle will do), and ran a line horizontally to the center of the rear hole in the emblem from this vertical line.

The vertical measurement is 2 7/8" measured from the upper edge of the grill opening. The measurement from there horizontally to the emblem hole is 2 3/8". All the other holes are referenced in the AIM. Little to much time on my hands today. Hope this helps.

          Thanks
That will be a big help. What year do you have? Is it a 4 pin? I assume the emblem is parallel with the vent.

If you feel real bored some time maybe you can do the same for the right side.
Do you know what the reference locations in the Assembly manual refer to?

          Thanks again.

I have a 70 as well. 4 studs(although my driver side broke)I don't know what the projections "0" and "15" refer to in the AIM (upc 11/13 sheet A9.) You can use the reference I gave you to measure .10 down from the rear hole to locate the front hole. Then use the measurements to find the other 2, or use the emblem to find them.

              Thanks again.
I will use this info and the reference marks on the sheet to locate the Pass side.

The dimensional references in the A.I.M. are to body grid "inch lines", which don't reference to any identifiable point on the exterior surface; they're a design reference to master locating points that are only meaningful with the body set up to grid master on a surface plate for body dimensional checking. Probably more than you wanted to know

I thought that maybe it was something like that. Is there any reference to another part that I could then transfer the locations, like the side vent?
