    Clutch "Z" cross shaft plug

A friend recently gave me 8 supposedly original clutch "Z" cross shaft plugs. These are the plugs that were supposedly originally installed BEFORE the plug was removed and replaced with a "Zirk" fitting. I've never seen an "original" but the JG says that the Zirk is removed and the red plug presses into the hole. These will not press into the hole, however, they are perfectly designed to snap over the nipple of the Zirk fitting. Are these correct? They are a medium red in color, and have "Lubricap", Pat. No. 2530888 embossed on the tops. Does anyone know? I've seen the repro's advertised in the Driveline, but have never seen one. Chuck

Chuck, I'm not sure, but the one I had in my 71' Lt-l went right in the hole, flat end first. It was bright red. Bob

I know this is going to cause a storm, and after all, it's been nearly 37 years, but I'm certain that my special order (March 16 build), St. Louis delivered SWC has had a zerk in the cross shaft since day one.

Tom -- can't really figure out your response, but I'm serious. I did all maintenance from day one. Even if I did let some lub jocky grease the car would he have had that zerk fitting with the larger than normal thread. I heard about the "plug" a few years ago, and it's always bothered me. Could installing the zerk have been party of factory delivery prep? I'm gonna go back and look at my shop manual and AIM again.

Duke you are correct. I to have had my car since day one and saw them unload and prep the car. It had a zerk from day one. Also my tail light bulbs were all broke at the base and had to be replace by me since the shop guys never saw it. Also they had to push my FI car off the trailer since it would not start. Bad fuel pump on the unit.

Darn it Duke, here I go having to apologize. Sorry, I was kidding around, no offense please.

Also, in regard to Chuck, I've never seen the original either but I did buy the ones seen reproduced and mine fit in the hole. I never thought of or really tried to "oppositely" put one over the zerk fitting. Tom #24014

David -- Thank God. Now I know I'm not crazy. So where did this idea come from that '63s must have a plug in the cross shaft. Was it a running change in '63 or did it start in a later model year? A fuelie! Mmmmmm! What's your sequence number. Mine L-76 is 10943. My tail light lens were okay, but the St. Louis prep guys got over-exuberant with the buffer and burned the roof ridge. Should I duplicate the burn after the repaint so it's "factory original"? (Just kidding!)

Re: Clutch "Z" cross shaft plug

I always thought that the fittings were probably were already installed as I have never seen on of these plugs and I have worked on more of these cars than I care to admit. I find it hard to believe that an item like that was left unfinished and I am certain that dealer personel were not thorough enough for me not to run across one somewhere that was missed.

Re: Clutch "Z" cross shaft plug

My '63 AIM (sect 7 sheet C1.00) clearly shows a 9411010 [zerk] fitting. The sheet was released on 3-30-62 and has only one revision -- a change to the clutch lever assembly dated [obscured]-19-62. So when did St. Louis start using the plug. It must have been after the end of the '63 production run.

The 66 AIM shows a plug #3828498 to be inserted into the clutch cross shaft zerk fitting hole. TBarr #24014

The '65 AIM shows the same Z-shaft plug "498"; w/no revision dates, so it must have been in '64.

Duke My # is 15675 built the 4th week of may. I ordered the car in Nov 62 and took delivery in June 63. The lens were not broken but the bulbs were twisted off in their sockets.
