I am wondering what the differences are between the 1969 and 1970 speedometer and tachometer for the big block 390 horsepower versions with 4 spd. Same red line?

Re: Speedo/Tach: 1969 vs 1970
Tony----
The 1969 and 1970 speedometers are, at a minimum, visually exactly the same. Also, both were of the same original SERVICE part number---GM #6492696. As far as the tachometer goes, I believe that the 1969 L-36 and the 1970 LS-5 are exactly the same, including the redline configuration. The original SERVICE part numbers for both were the same---GM #6469567. This doesn't guarantee, of course, that the PRODUCTION part numbers were the same. But, I believe that they were.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: Speedo/Tach: 1969 vs 1970
Thanks to Joe and Terry for the information. I have found someone locally who has a Speedo/Tach panel off a 1969 that I may consider swapping for mine in my 1970. I guess I would have to open up both speedos and tranplant the high beam lenses as my car has a blue (late 70) lens.
BTW, if got a replacement cable (without the sheath or cover) from NAPA for about $10. I have to cut to size. No big deal except the end of the plastic part that broke off in the speedo is still in the speedo and would not come out with a vacuum cleaner. So I will have to remove the unit from the car. Yuck...
While I'm at it, I may as well replace the speedo with a good used one that I found. What is a fair price for a 69 speedo? 69tach? Combo? How do I reset the odometer to read what my car reads?Tony- Top

Re: Speedo/Tach: 1969 vs 1970
Tony,
I've heard of people getting the little plastic bit out by heating a needle or pin red hot and jabbing into it the plastic. When it cools, the plastic bit comes out with the needle.
Don't burn your fingers!
