I have a set of BB heads cast #6272990 date codes are both e-5-76.Does anybody know what these heads were originally used for.Are they possibly a replacement set sold over the counter?
The GM #6272990 head is a SERVICE-only, cast iron, rectangular port, open chamber big block cylinder head. It replaces all of the rectangular port, cast iron cylinder heads of the 69-71 period. It was never used in PRODUCTION for any application, but it has been used on many SERVICE engine assemblies, including the "LS-6" and "LS-7" engine assemblies which were available until about 10-12 years ago.
This cylinder head, which may also carry casting number 14096188, is still available from GM under GM #6260482. It is the only Mark IV-only cylinder head which remains available from GM.
Joe - this head is still listed under the performance category at gmpartsdirect.com, but the number comes up bad. I wonder if they finally discontinued it recently? .......Craig
I would not be a bit surprised if this head has been very recently discontinued. The only thing surprising is that it was available as long as it was. Tonawanda has not been tooled up to produce any Mark IV components for many years. I don't know how these heads were produced unless they just had a large inventory of them which were manufactured years ago. When they're gone, they're gone and that time may have arrived.
