My turn signal appears to have developed a mind of its own. When I manually slide the switch under the dash attached to the steering column forward the left signal flashes. When I manually move it to the rear, the right signal flashes. Move it to the middle, nothing. All this occurs independent of the turn signal indicator lever on the column. Regardless of where I place the column lever, it has no effect on the operation of the turn signals. Is there also a switch related to the column lever? I have replaced the switch on the column with a new switch. Thanks.

Re: 63 Turn signal switch
Steve, from the column to the switch everything is mechanical. When you move the signal arm on the column, a stiff wire inside a plastic sheath either moves down or up. This wire is attached to the lower switch by a pressure clip.
Things to watch. 1) Move the signal arm and see if the wire is moving up and/or down? 2) Check the attachment at the lower switch.
I rebuilt my column last year and have some pics I can send, let me know

Re: 63 Turn signal switch
Harry, the signal arm has no impact on the wire or the switch. The adjusting screw is tight at the switch. The cable is not moving. Is there another switch inside the steering column at the lever, behind the horn button?- Top

Re: 63 Turn signal switch
Steve, Disconnect the wire from the lower switch and try the signal arm. This is just to test to see if the lower switch is jammed. If the wire still does not move, then it sounds as if the connection has separated inside the column at the top where the arm and cam come together. You could call this a mechanical switch.
It is a rather straight forward fix, but it does take time and parts probably need to be ordered. As I recall you need to pull the steering wheel and the steering shaft that goes to the rag joint to get at the connection.

Re: 63 Turn signal switch
Steve, There is NO second switch behind the horn button. Just a physical connection between the switch lever and the cable. The lever is screwed into a rotating ring, which holds the cable captive. When the lever turns, the ring should move the cable (and switch the column switch). If the lever is not moving the cable, the problem is behind the horn buttons so its best to pull the steering wheel and see what's happening (or not).- Top

Re: 63 Turn signal switch
Harry, I loosened the screw holding the cable. The lever does not move the cable at all. So, the problem must be behind the horn button inside the column. I do have the AIM and will look it up. Now, where did I put that steering wheel puller? Another example of a five minute job turning into a five hour project! Thanks everyone for your assistance. Steve- Top
