new lifter instillation

Putting new hydraulic lifters in a 63 300HP 327. Do they require filling or "priming" with oil prior to instillation? Saw something about this in the manual, but it was not entirely clear to me.

I recently installed new hydraulic lifters from Crane, and the instructions specifically said priming them was not not only not necessary, but not recommended. Don't know about the other manufacturers' instructions.

if you fill them with oil you may not be able to preload them because the pushrod seat may not move

Re: Adusting rockers with "Old" lifter ?

I removed my heads this winter to have them gone over. The hydraulic lifters are still in the motor.(In good shape) What is the correct way to install and adjust the rockers? (I know about the "One turn down from zero lash), but should I do anything to the lifters before adjusting the rockers? (refill, bleed-off, or just leave them alone) Thanks for your input.

i would do the adjustment with the intake manifold off so you can see the plunger in the lifter. that way you are sure when you are at zero lash before you do the one turn down. also just install one pushrod at a time so you do not depress any lifters before you adjust them as you turn the engine over. if you do it this way you should not have to to any farther adjustments after getting the engine running

The safest and best way to adjust your lifters is when the engine is running.
Weather they are solid or hydraulic.
Solid = get the engine up to running temp. then adjust
Hydraulic= Hot or cold , run engine, loosen each rocker nut back till you hear tapping , turn nut down till you just hear no tapping noise , do this on each one.
Then with the engine off , turn the nut one turn down , replace the cover and go riding.
To fill new lifters I install the push rods and rockers adjusting the rockers even to where they just make contact to the push rods and lifters,( cam lob down)remove the spark plugs then turn the engine over for about a minute or more watching the oil pressure build up.
Then install the plugs, start engine and adjust.
