    Mid Year Tach Drive

    Is it possible to lubricate the entire length of the tach cable by lubricating from the distributor end? Will the lubricant eventually work its way to the drive of the tachometer?

    Tom, if my feeble memory service me correctly, the cable is spiral wound From the tach to the distributor. It is not too hard to remove the cable and lube.

    Many years ago one of them thar furrin sporty cars, Jaguar I believe, had a car with the cable wound from the distributor to the tach. I understand that a lengthy ride would guarantee you a ruined pair of pants that was covered with oil. Then again, if a British car did not leak oil somewhere, it was out of oil

      Yes, it is possible, but usually the amount of grease you use will doom you to failure. The cable is a very small screw and it acts as a pump over a period of time. It pumps the grease or lubricant up thru the case and into the tachometer head. Lubricant in the tach head is not good. This happens most frequently with speedometer cables as some brilliant people at some large parts houses (mid Illinois)(Penn) etc. are marketing fittings to grease speedo cables. Also 90 degree fittings for distributors with grease fittings.

      This is when a very small amount of grease applied with the palm of you hand will do the trick. Yes, I know it's a pain to get the tach or speedo cable removed from the instrument cluster but doing it right will save you time and a bunch of bucks in the long run.
