When I disassembled the engine on my '59 there was not a spacer behind the harmonic balancer. Upon studying the CC catalogue I noticed that they listed a spacer that is supposed to be behind the harmonic balancer on a 58-62 283. My motor didn't have any pulley alignment problems that I am aware of, and I've rebuilt quite a few SBC motors and haven't had one with a spacer behind the balancer. Should there be a spacer behind the balancer on my '59 230 h.p. 283?
Spacer compensates for the thickness of the top motor mount, The mount spaces the water pump out about 1/8 inch and the spacer compensates on the lower pulley by spacing out the balancer/pulley assembly.
Most people don't realize it's missing because it's hard to see a 1/8 difference at a glance . But if you close one eye while looking at the pulley alignment you will see the difference . In most cases it won't hurt any thing not having it but could put wear on the belt or at most throw the belt off.
