    Carlisle 2005

My wife and I are planning a trip to the Corvette swap meet in Carlisle this August. We're going to spend three days there. We're in dire need of suggestions from veterans of where to stay, what airport to fly into (from Spokane WA), etc.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Mark, there a quite a few national chain hotels at the I-81 exit, which is only a few miles away. Harrisburg is the closest airport, but it is not a "major", BWI or PHL are the closest large airports.

Nearest airport is Harrisburg. I doubt it can be had direct from Seattle.
Any motel along the Carlisle Harrisburg Pike is relatively close. There are more than a dozen along that strip that runs right through town.

Mark, things to consider on your trip.

          1) The most parts will be available the first day, but the prices will be the highest with not much room for negotiation. If your looking for a particular part, I would suggest you don't buy the first one as prices even on the first day could vary between vendor. Do a quick tour of everything then come back to the vendor with the best price. Also, don't forget that you can enter the event the evening prior to the official opening.

          2) The best prices are the last day but the selection will be limited.

          3) Hotels in Carlisle go for a premium price, normally about 180 to 220 per night has been my experience. Carlisle is a great little town and the parade is great. To pick up a room under the $90.00 look closer to Harrisburg. You will also find a larger selection of restaurants. Book on line, sometimes the hotels miss the week on the Internet and you can still get a low price in Carlisle.

If you are also interested in antiques, there are several shops in the area. My wife usually drops me at the gate at 7:00 am and picks me up at 5:30 pm. This keeps me happy and her happy on the antique hunt.

          Have a fun trip

Mark - I fly in from Tucson. Closest airport is Harrisburg, but fares are higher. I fly in to Baltimore MD BWI usually as it is cheaper than any of the other airports in the area, and is an easy 100 mile or so drive. I usually stay in Harrisburg, and drive over to Carlisle every day (20 minutes)...Craig

Is it worth going to the spring Carlisle or not

I thought I heard that the fall event is the big one to attend, is that correct?

Scott, from a pure size standpoint the April event is much larger (3X) than the August event. The April event is ALL cars where the August event is essentially ALL Corvette.

There is a Spring(April) and Fall(Sept) show. Both of these are 'all cars' events.
Of the two, Spring is the bigger and better one.

Of course, for us corvette freaks, Corvettes at Carlisle in August is the one to attend.
