I am nearing the end of a two year restoration of a Lynndale Blue 67 ,427/390 Roadster with AC The car is loaded with nearly every option available .The car has ALL original drive train and I have close to $100,000 invested. It is ready for paint. My body man suggested I go with BC CC .He is very capable of doing a laquar finish but knowing how picky I am he suggested I don't do laquar.I know I would prefer the appearance of show paint ,BUT I intent to have the car judged. The deduction for a non original paint is 100% for originality and may be some for condition(over restored). With this much invested I feel I need to go with the laquar.I feel the value of the car will increase with the correct finish also. I'm 50/50.!!! I follow this forum daily and have alot of respect for the members and their knowledge.What would you do ?

Judging rules are....
each line item MUST have a minimum of 10% on originality in order to qualify for ANY condition points. So, except for the points set aside for exterior color, you can expect a full deduction IF you selection/application of paint is visibly detectable in differing from factory original.
Also, new NCRS judging policy has been adopted for 2005 to further quantify applicable deduction(s) in the exterior area and it includes: specific hue of color and metal flake/partical size consistency. These new rules were recently published in the club's Driveline magazine.
Soooo, the gap widens between restoring a Corvette to factory concours vs. concours d'elegance standards. Your painter may be familiar with what's an award winning crowd pleaser at Pebble Beach, but it's a very different story at NCRS/NCCB in this area....- Top

I have the two part paint, been on it for years , no stress marks cracks and chips , I drive it all the time owned for 26 years. Don't give me lacquer! And when I sell the Vett I don't think I'll loose money because of the paint ! only points if I show it NCRS

Using the new paint judging guidelines, it is possible to score 100% with modern paints, BUT the time involved in making modern paints look like lacquer is considerable. In my humble opinion it is worth the time. As Roy says about his 67 the paint is more durable. Modern lacquers are quite different from the Lucite or Duracryl that you bought in yesteryear. The metalics are different, the binders are different, etc. Plus a lot of the mixing colors are no longer available. It is your car and your money. Make it like you want it.Dick Whittington- Top

Another possibility is to go with a single stage urethane, especially if it's a solid color. If it's a metallic, the urethane is a little harder to color and and buff to a "lacquer-like" finish than the solids. The urethane has excellent durability and is superior in almost all respects to the lacquers that are currently available.- Top

From the way you describe yourself you remind me very much of someone I know. That being said,I think I understand the reason you asked the question to the Forum's contributors. I believe you WANT "showcar" looks, probably would never settle for less....over restored would not bother you one bit....except....there's that NCRS thing. If it wasn't for them, you'd have this car painted with the best looking finish, by the best painter around. NCRS says the paint needs to look like it did in 1967....and that's certainly NOT "showcar" by todays standards. First decision you need to make is....will I settle for 1967 looking paint. If you can say yes to that question....you should go with lacquer. If you know in your heart you'll hate looking at the car if it does not look perfect....then you should probably have a "showcar" paint job and accept the NCRS position on this type of paint. Are you painting for the NCRS or painting for you? Do you think you have to paint for NCRS because you have a high dollar car? These questions might even have different answers at different times in your life. If it were me....and I've got one of each right now....I'd go with the best lacquer paint job I could get....and I'd ask the Forum for recommendations on who I should hire to paint my car. I had the same problem trying to decide which paint to use Lacquer or BC CC. I decided on BC CC. I'm going to drive the car and felt this was the best choice. The paint will look better in 15 years and holds up better I beleive. We dulled the door jams, the hood ledge, around the grills ect. I was willing to take the point hit and it wasn't that bad. I still got a Top Flight with 97% in Windsor last summer. Mike- Top

As much can be said about the application/finishing of the paint as the type of paint. If your not going to drive the car much then any paint will hold up. I would be more concerned as to the talent of the technician to produce the finished product you desire.
