C1 color code

I've got a 1962 c1 corvette. Its missing the color code tag, doesnt have the original engine. The title nor any of the paperwork depicts the build date. I'd like to find the build date and the original color code. Any ideas? Is there a dept within GM that can provide this information based upon a vin #?

C1 Corvettes had no color code tag. You can only determine the original color by doing some detective work. You can look in hidden areas and probably determine the original color unless the car has been restored well. The build date can be approximated by the VIN number, but GM has no records that will gine any detail info. The lack of trim tags on C1 cars is one of the reasons that a lot of us like to restore these cars. As long as you paint it one of the factory original colors, it will take no deducts at judging. When I do a color change on one of these cars, I strip the entire body to bare glass, and you would never be able to find any clues to it's original color, but if a car has not had such a restoration, there will be plenty of clues.

Here is a pic. of a 61 Corvette "silver" if the Vett has never been paint striped in the truck area use a quarter to remove paint in this area to find the original color of your Corvette.

Another point of interest to some is that "some" Corvettes that might be ordered with a power top option . many bodies have dimple to locate the hardware if so ordered.

I have a 61 Red car and scraped the bulkhead behind the passenger seat to hopefully see RED in crayon. I did not find it. It appears from your photo that the SILVER is on the drivers side in your photo. Am I correct. ????

That's RIGHT! but behind the seat will tell you weather it had a hard top or soft top on most 61 ,62's. And so many other little things also that many people don't seam to know!! that I and Noland wrote about. I don't like to argue any more like many of use older NCRS guys feel today, so we just stay out of it.
We were the ones that made this known.

My friend's 60 has it on the trunkwall (trunk side) behind the passenger's side. A local 61 has it behind the passenger's seat back (passenger compartment side).

If it was a Canadian Delivered Vette you can get most of the info from GM, Oshawa, Ontario

I was under the impression that all 61's had the color behind the passenger seat. By looking at the photo and Roy responding that was incorrect. I was surprised not to find it on the passenger side when I looked. I will now scrape behind the drivers seat and I'll bet I find it. Apparently 60 in earlier cars had the color marking facing the trunk and that changed in 61.

Because the 61 was a change over from 60, the EARLY 61 may be in the truck ( that was the pic I showed (early) later seat area. Sorry guys I for got to think of that.Getting old.
