Metal tags on my seat frames?

I removed the covers and foams from my tired old seats today and found numbered metal tags hanging from the springs. What is their significance? Look here for pictures http://www.pbase.com/valrico4/my_seats
Is the 7-63 stencil their assembly date?

    Chuck------

The metal tags are the part number for the seat frame (cushion frame or back frame).

I didn't notice the stencil in the pictures, but I looked at them rather quickly. I suspect that such a stencil represents a date code, though.

Can't read the detailed stencilled numbers on your tags, but here is what was on my late 396. 2 tags, of same length, were laid together before being bent around the wiring.
Seat bottoms: SG-3866415-4 (one tag); 7-19 (the other)
Seat back (one back missing tags): SG-3863371-2 (one tag); 7-6 (other)

I assume that they represent dates (July 19th and 6th).

Those first pictures were shot hastily. I am rushing the frames to Al Knoch so he can work his magic on them and I will get them back in Orlando with new everything (red leather!) ready to mount back into the car. My tag numbers are: backs> SG-3824313-18, bottoms> SG-3851646. These are not the original seats but I believe they are close enough to correct. My VIN suggests a birthday of Jan 24th 1964, the stencil inside the covers is 7-63 so maybe they came from a VERY early 64 car. You can see the pictures at www.pbase.com/valrico4/my_seats. Here is a better shot of the tags.

Re: Metal tags on my seat frames?

The metal tags are the part number for the seat frame and spring assembly, which were purchased pre-assembled from an outside supplier; St. Louis applied the foam and covers and assembled the backs and bottoms. The marking on the back side of the covers is the date code which was applied automatically when the bulk roll material was manufactured by DuPont.

                Purpose Of Coil Springs?

What is the purpose of the four coil springs that connect the rearmost Z spring to the seat frame on the bottom units? If missing or damaged, do they need to be replaced when adding new foam and covers?

                Thanks,

                Mike S

John, so is it a GM part number or a number for the supplier's use? And, I know this might be tough to answer but any ideas on how long the bulk roll cover material lasted per roll? I realize use is influenced by the number of orders per color. If this roll was made by DuPont in July '63 could it have lasted for a Jan '64 car build?

I can't say Mike. Shoot the question to someone like Al Knoch.

                      Mike,

I think they hold something in position for a fore and aft movement. I replaced mine when I redid my seats on a 67. The new springs came with the spring kit.

I don't know why they are there, but they are there.

                        Chuck -

The part number on the tag will also be found on the A.I.M. sheet that shows the assembly of the seat; it's a GM part number. The bulk material was spooled on HUGE rolls, so I imagine they'd last quite a while for doing the "cut-and-sew" to make low-volume Corvette seat trim covers at Findlay Industries.
