    Randy -

Front cable replacement is covered in step-by-step detail on page 5-15 of the 1963 Corvette Shop Manual.

Re: 64 front parking brake cable

      Randy,

I recently disassembled the parking brake assembly on my '64. One thing that I did not recall seeing in the shop manual was a step calling for the removal of a pin attached to a square shaped piece of metal from the parking brake rod. The metal square depresses a switch that turns off the brake light switch when the parking brake lever is pushed fully forward. The pin also prevents the removal of the parking brake rod from the parking brake sleeve inside the car (sorry, probably not using the correct terms here). A metal ball affixed to the end of the brake cable hooks into the rod assembly inside the car. Once you remove the pin with the metal square, you can then pull the rod free of the sleeve (after disconnecting the other end of the cable of course) and cable replacement is a snap.

A KEY point that I learned after much consternation and cussing is that the pin is PRESSED into the rod, not threaded which would much too easy and convenient. From a painful and contorted position on your back you can see a small hole on the underside of the brake shaft inside the car. Pull on the parking brake handle until the pin lines up with the hole. You can then use a small punch through the hole in the sleeve to free the pin from the shaft. In my case the pin was lodged in pretty tight and it was a real PITA to push it free.

Now if could just figure out why the square head rips into my a/c hose when I engage the parking brake...

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any questions.
