67 B/B Oil Fill Cap Finish

Hey Guys and Gals, Happy New Year!

Hoping someone can tell me the correct finish for the oil fill cap on a 400 horse 67 Big Block. The JG I've got says black chromate, but I've heard they should be painted black. Opinions? I understand that black chromate is sometimes greenish. Is it like a black oxide?

    thanks in advance!

    Brandon------

The GM spec for the part calls for black paint. The ones that I have inspected were definitely painted semi-flat black. It's possible that some were otherwise finished, but I really think that, if so, it was the exception and not the rule.

I have a 400HP '67 myself. The cap on my engine, which may or not be original, is a greenish finish that almost looks like a plating of some kind, it's kind of hard to describe. I've seen some which are supposively original to their engine that resemble mine, for whatever that's worth.

I looked some more at the cap that I have. It has the S stamped in the rivet on top, but not the "sm" in a circle as specified by the JG. Also, I was told several yrs ago by an NCRS judge that the square brass rivet on the inside is supposed to have a dimple in it, like it was "drilled out", but mine does not have that. Do I have a later cap, or is mine OK?

          Thanks, Brandon

Mine has the small circled sm logo, which as you say, is the correct marking on original caps according to the judging manual.
