Learn from my mistake ...oil line installation

First I want to thank all those who are always willing to share their technical knowledge. Truly appreciated. As a "newbie" seems like I am asking about 10 times for each helpful answer I can provide.

For the benefit of other "mechanically less inclined" please let me at least tell you what NOT to do.

During my instrumentent cluster replacement, I thought I would also replace the oil line as reuse of the existing copper line was not recommended. I would not have been too proud to have read the directions but there were none. When I installed the oil line at the engine I didn't look that closely at how the fitting worked. I installed the line until it bottomed out but my immediate thought was that I was blocking the oil entrance to the line and I would get erroneous readings. So I raised the line from the full seated position about a 1/8" and tightened the nut. I now realize the line bottoms out in a tapered hole. When I tightened the fitting it was compressing on air instead of the tube as I now know. I was also careless enough not to pull on the line to verify tightness.

On start up the oil line immediately blew off and oil spewed everywhere. Took me all day to clean up the mess including the ceiling!!!

I love hearing these stories... Of course, I've...

...never done anything that stupid. Well, not for a month or two, or less, or yesterday, or this afternoon.

      Oil Line Re-connect

How is the oil line disconneted and reconnected to the back of the oil pressure gage?

        Re: Oil Line Re-connect

        Ralph,
There are brass compression nuts that compress on the oil line at both the motor and gauge end of the oil line.

Simply undo the nut on the back of the gauge. You will notice the nut will not slide off the oil line. I was fortunate enough to get at least one end correct.

          Re: Oil Line Re-connect

Both ends of Chevrolet oil pressure lines use a GM-proprietary fitting design, as opposed to the conventional separate compression-sleeve fitting used for aftermarket (and common plumbing compression) fittings. The female fitting has a tapered seat which compresses the tapered end of the male fitting on the pipe, providing a leak-free connection. Later nylon pressure lines used the same arrangement, but had a tiny brass insert in each end so the I.D. of the nylon line had something to compress against.

            Randy,
I can't even begin to recall the number of postings I had asking advice during the body-off restoration of my '67. If I would have been too embarassed to ask all the questions I did, and admit all the problems I had, I might still be working on it.
