    C1/ 57 Steering column paint

I have heard speculation that St Louis may have used enamel rather than lacquer on steering columns for better heat resistance within the engine compartment. I don't buy it but thought I'd better check before going with lacquer and getting it wrong. Thank you.

But was the cast iron steering box itself painted also or left natural? I've seen them treated both ways.
