    Chevy Engine Orange Test

I had to satisfy myself so I purchased one can of each of five (5) possible engine orange spray paints for my '59. I sprayed each paint on a piece of metal side-by-side and compared the shades of red to orange. Now remember.... this is an unscientific, NO statistics applied, one-time test and is my PERSONAL observation! I did not test any of the earlier (55 to 57) Chevy engine colors because they are far to "red" for for the 58-60 Corvettes. The following 5 paints are rated from 1 to 5 in declining red value (or increasing orange value):

    Paint --- Comments:

    1) VHT Chevrolet Orange --- This was the most "red" of all the orange paints
and as far as I was concerned, unacceptable as a Chevy 58-60 engine color

    2) Plasti-cote #200 --- A lot less red and more orange

    3) Quanta Chevy Engine Orange --- A better balance between reddishness and a
true orange. My personal choice based on what I "remember" about Chevy orange

    4) Duplicolor DE-1620 --- Even less red. A brighter, almost fluorescent color
orange. I thought it almost glowed.

    5) Duplicolor DE-1607 Classic --- I had a can left over from when I last did an
engine several years ago. I do not think you can purchase it any longer.
This was a true, almost pumpkin orange. It was TOO orange. Compared to the
other colors, I think it's unacceptable.

All these evaluations were done under flourescent lighting. When I took them upstairs into an incandescent room, there was much less difference between all the colors. I truly thought that paints 2,3 & 4 would have all been acceptable.

So there you have it.....Quanta will be my source for my engines in the future!

    Re: Chevy Engine Orange Test

    Brad,

I purchased quanta chevy orange for my '67 almost a year before I actually used it. When I finally painted the engine, I ran out and had to order more. The new cans were way more "glossy" than the first ones I used and I had to do the entire engine over with the new cans. I don't know if that was a result of sitting around all that time or not, but Quanta insisted they had not changed the formula in any way.
