    Vacuum Can Specs

    Hi,

I've got specs on all the NAPA/Echlin cans, but have two GM cans that I'd like information on. If one happens to be what I'm after, then I don't need to buy a new one. Well, at least there is "less" need to do so.

I have one numbered "437 15" that is supposed to be original to 1972 350/200 Corvettes. I have another labeled "MS" and below that "201 15" which came from a 1966 Corvette distributor.

I believe the 15 in each refers to total advance given by the can. What I'm especially after is when each is supposed to start working, and when the vacuum is "all in."

    Thanks,

    Patrick

    Re: Vacuum Can Specs

I've never found a "one sheet" listing of all (or most) or the OE Delco vacuum cans.

Lacking actual specs you can pump them down with a Mighty Vac and just look at the point where the plunger rod starts and reaches the limit.

The first three digits are the the last three of the GM long number, and the last two digits are the max. advance in CRANKSHAFT degrees.

      Re: Vacuum Can Specs

1116201 advance starts 7-9 in Hg, Max 15-16 Max, advance in distributor degrees = 8
1973437 starts 7-9 in. Hg, max, 16-18 in. Hg. advance in distributor degrees = 8

      The 1970-72 TIM&JG calls for a can with 437 and 16 for the 1972 350/200.
The 1116201 doesn't apply to any of the 1966 distributors listed in that TIM&JG. I don't have the remaining books to track it down here in the house, but we all know who does. :-)

      Duke,
Delco Remy Test Specifications, DR-3245-2 and supplements have the distributor can specifications. Not on one page though, it takes two pages.

        Patrick-----

As used in the GM #1112050 distributor, the GM #1973437 vacuum control has the following specs:

inches of vacuum to start plunger= 8"

maximum advance= 12 crankshaft degrees at 15" vacuum

(note: the maximum advance which the control can produce as stamped on the unit is not necessarily the maximum that it may produce in a specific distributor configuration)

I can't find any 1966 Corvette application that originally used the GM #1116201 vacuum control.

The GM #1116201 vacuum control was replaced by the GM #1116163 in January, 1965.

Some applications which originally used the GM #1116201 later used the GM #1973437. I expect that the '201' and '437' have very similar advance characteristics.

          201 canister

The 201 canister is from a '63 model Corvette or passenger car. I've been looking one in good shape.

Thanks you everyone. It sounds like the cans are very close, and unfortunately neither will fit exactly what I need for Dad's 72. That's OK, as I can easily stop at Napa and order what I need, but thought I'd find out what I have and if it might work.

              Which canister do you need?

I'm not very familiar with '72 Corvette distributors, but I do have some used canisters that might be correct.

                201's death prematurely announced

I too saw that "Parts History Revision" saying to use 1116163 instead of 1111201, as of Jan '65, but I wonder if they got it backwards. I see no Delco production use of "163" post-'62, but the "201" was used often, at least through 1969, and on many Corvette distibutors (eg: '63: 1111022/024 '67: 1111258 '68: 1111296,438,441,475 '69: 1111491,928). The 201's are easy to find in junkyards, as they were used on SO many other Chevrolet distributors.

No, I think they have it right. The '201' was discontinued from SERVICE in January, 1965 and was replaced by the '163' for SERVICE. That does not mean that the PRODUCTION use of the '201' ended in 1965, though. In most cases, the PRODUCTION and SERVICE use of a part will end (or, begin) about the same time. However, these distributor vacuum controls are an exception. I don't know the reason for this "quirk".
