what material is the upper shifter boot supposed to be made of? the old one on the car was leather. the new one i received is molded rubber with an embeded metal where the 4 screws go thru.

'68 and '69 were unique in terms of interior shift boot with the leather boot starting in '70. From your copy of the Judging Guide:
"All acrs with automatic transmissions have a sliding two-piece black plastic seal around the shift selector lever. Manual transmission cars have a rubber boot. In 1968, the boot has a single-fold bellows; the 1969 has a two-fold bellows." -

The reason that you car has the leather boot is that GM discontinued the original, rubber upper boot about 30 years ago and replaced it, for 68-69 SERVICE, with the 70+ style leather boot. So, somewhere along the way someone replaced it and if they ordered one from their GM dealer, they got the leather variety.
By the way, the leather boot, GM #3977797, was once quite inexpensive. However, over the years it escalated rapidly in price. When it was discontinued 2 years ago it carried a GM list price of $119.37.In Appreciation of John HinckleyComment

I have looked at a number of cars and think the original 68 shifter boot was taller along with the single fold. TerryComment
