Lyndon, if you will go to the header that comes up when you sign on and click on NCRS Judging Awards. Scroll down until you find the Sportsman. Everything that you need to know (and probably more) is there. Good luck

I don't mean to put the Sportsman Division down , but it's only a secure parking lot area for Corvettes. That is the reason I enter it.
If you have a Corvette station wagon you will receive the award .
Now comes the anger and comments at me !!!

You can even pull a trailer behind your Corvette like others do and I do in my 55. This was the Sportsman class in Ca. National meet 04.

            Hey,
Wasn't the San Luis Obispo meet? That was a pretty cool looking setup if that was the meet.

                Re: sportsman

As others stated, it means you drove your Corvette (any flavor/mod/condition) to the event and parked it there. Nothing more. Not judged, shown, or anything else.

                  Re: Nice rig Roy!

There's a Gent selling a trailer very similar to yours just down the road from me. Jeesh, he said it was a "one off prototype" Guess I'll pass on it now

I think that even the "Sportsman Class" Vettes no matter what their condition sould receive a nice judging acknowledgement recognizing the time, effort and money invested to keep the legend alive, even if we "Sportsmen" ARE at the bottom of the Corvette food chain. Talk about your outcast kids on the outside looking in!

I'll go out on a limb here and venture a guess that better than 50% of the Vettes that get recognized by the motoring public are "Sportsman" type Vettes.

It's those visual hits that make the fella getting ice cream for the kiddies think "Man I gotta get me one" when that customized Vette rumbles up and parks.

That's the way it was for me, I kept seeing and hearing an LT-1 on the street. Finally I couldn't stand it any longer, and the rest is history. One of the plusses for me is that I joined this great organization!

So, why not have "Sportsman" judging? Great practice for fledgling Flight judges?

A quick inspection for "General" correctness with minimal deducts on obvious visual biggies like rims and tires, flares, headers, custom sterios, custom paint, etc.

Yeah Yeah I know, "Get involved" "Make a difference" "Attend Chapter/Regional meetings" etc etc etc.

This is just my casual observations to possibly spur more productive hobby related banter to maybe do just that "Make a difference".

NCRS will tell you that they may have % 8 of surviving Corvettes in NCRS as members. Less then that number attend NCRS meets.

The 'other' award that's similar to Sportsman....

the Founder's Award, does what you're looking for. It involves a minimal level of judging (Chapter Level; objective Third Flight or better) along with owner participation (actually judge some Corvettes and obtain a Level One recognition) including a healthy stint of putting the car on the road and actually driving/using it.

The Sportsman Award was aimed at two other Corvette owner silhouettes: (1) those who's cars may be so far from factory original they can't make a Third Flight award (radical engine + radical body/paint), (2) those who don't want the personal 'stress' associated with undergoing the judging process on their car, (3) those who don't really want to get so active as to actually perform judging or tabulating chores.

Actually, buying and reading the NCRS Judging Reference Manual, should shed light. You should see the club is RICH with alternative recognition programs beyond 'forcing' a member to turn 'baby' into a trailer queen! In a two dimensional universe (X = car and Y = owner), our existing programs pretty richly run the gammut of how much car vs. owner involvement there is in obtaining a club recognition with the intention to 'box out' nobody and include everyone!

                          Re: Really

So what about the person who doesn't care or who knows, that they can't achieve any one of the following.
A level 1 or higher rating for the judging or tabulation recognition program?
                          Achieve ANY flight award.
Provide an article for the "Restorer"?
Won't drive the 500 miles in a "National Road Tour"?
Achieve 96% on the Ops check .... twice
                          All within three years.

As of today, the archives reference 2001 numbers of which 135 individuals have received this award (one person twice) out of a 14,500 membership.

It just seems rather daunting from my probably overly simplistic point of view.

Does anyone have current numbers on "Founders Award" recipients?

                            Re: Really

I've done everything but the Road Tour (well, my Restorer article is in process). I easily could have achieved Founders while campaigning my 72 in 2003 and going to the National Meet. In fact, one NCRS officer thought I was attempting the Founders in 2003 and pointed out how close I was to getting it. Oh well.

Drive your car a couple hundred miles to a meet (for free points towards your award), and I'd virtually guatantee that any Corvette with a motor of the same casting as original and without flared fenders will get a Third Flight.
Level 1 judging points can be accrued easily by going to your Chapter's events or visiting some seminars at the National Meet.
The Restorer article only has to be provided, not published.
The 96% Ops check is likely the toughest part of the whole thing.

Maybe I'll try for 2007, taking my 72 and getting its 5th Bowtie Star at the same time I get a Founders. I've got to drive out there anyway.

So, I hope you can see that it's not really horribly difficult. I almost nailed it all in a 7 week period of time (since I already have more than a 1.0 level of judging).
