    C1 Paint

I'm thinking of purchasing PPG Duracryl DDL Acrylic Lacquer paint to use on my 61 red/red/white coves
Has anyone used this paint ? Will it weather well with seasonal temperature changes or use BC/CC?

Is the PPG code the correct shade for Roman Red?

How much paint will be needed to paint the complete car including all compartments, interior parts , front of wheels, etc. ?

Feedback appreciated before spending $300.00/ gall. Peter

    Peter,
I have used DDL Roman Red and Ermine White, several times and find the color match to be very close to original, and the paint is about as durable as you can expect Lacquer to be. About the only real difference that I can tell between the current DDL lacquer and thw old stuff, it that the new lacquer seems to cure a lot more slowly. I have found that I have to buff the finish a second time after at least 6 months to get a real high gloss. With the lacquer of 20 years ago, after about a week, the paint was hard enough to buff to a very high gloss. The new stuff buffs out nice, but to get a real glassy gloss, you will need to wait a while. For judging, this is not really a problem, since a high gloss will usually make the judges question whether you used clear or not. On my Roman Red 60, I had to pull up some color at each judging to prove that I used no clear. You know, lacquer may not be the most durable finish, but is sure is a snap to touch-up chips!

      John,
Thanks for your recommendation and response!! How much paint did you buy for your 60? I don't have easy access to more paint. Will a gallon do everything and leave a little for touch-ups later.

        Peter,
A gallon should do real nicely unless you get carried away with paint and block, paint and block......

John, back in the 70's when you could buy the real stuff (DuPont Lucite Acrylic Lacquer), I used to wait at least an hour after spraying to wet sand and another 3-4 hours before buffing , depending on temp.

John is right about the gallon, but I believe that I would get five quarts while I was having it mixed. Mix it all together so that any variations in one or more cans will negated. That way you should have at least a quart plus for touch ups.

              Dick,
That's a good point, I think I will get 5 quarts mixed at the same time for good color match later.
              Thanks, Peter

                Ed,
You are right about that! Now you can treat some of the single stage ureathanes the same way. I use the PPG DCC Concept for my non-judged cars now, and you can color sand in 3 hours, and polish by the next day.

John, that's pretty impressive. I use Dupont urethane and wouldn't dare sand or buff it for at least 24 hrs., even after baking it. I must say, though, that when color sanded and buffed the urethanes seem to give an even better shine than the bc/cc finishes. It takes some work, but the urethanes can produce a really stunning finish.
