64 AIM and TM: KO's and clutch shaft (red) plug

Question one: Looking for the correct finish for the original 1964 knock-off wheel between the fins. Is it natural or painted?

Question two: From Chuck G's previous post, trying to narrow down the use of the plastic red plug used to plug the zerk grease fitting hole on the clutch cross shaft before the zerk fitting was installed. Current line of thought is that the plug was first used after the 1963 production but before 1965 production and would like to find a verification in the 1964 AIM. If possible what does the drawing rendition on the page show as well as the possible date of the changeover. Anyone got a 64 AIM they can check? Thanks for all help. TBarr #24014

Tom -- I'm 99.9 percent certain the '64 KOs were unpainted as was the case with the 63s. Tried to order KOs on my '63, but the dealer told me it would delay the build because they weren't released. Bought a set of early repros back in the late seventies. First use of the dark gray paint on the spider was in '65 -- probably to hide the brake dust that built up from the pads. I just love my drum brakes -- keeps those wheels soooooo clean! Thanks for the help on the cross shaft plug issue.

Tom --- My 2 cents on the first of your questions says the '64 factory KO's were painted silver, a slightly lighter "pewter" shade than the underlying aluminum natural. I say this based on an original April '64 (ink date stamp on back) set I had about 12 years ago. Someone with the '64 NCRS Tech Manual should post what it has to say on the subject.

Thanks for the responses. Those 1964 questions are starting to pile up. For the most part I'm just curious about both pieces of info since they were leftovers from two different times. I saw several 1964 postings lately and thought someone would pick up on it. TBarr #24014

Tom --- I'm surprised at the lack of response to your two queries. Seems that there's little interest in the '64 model year, either in the marketplace or this discussion group. Too bad -- for my money, they're a better car than the '63's. Now if you'd asked if Kelsey Hayes clear coated them, we'd REALLY get a thread going (heh heh).

            Wayne,

I'm a little surprised too. I think they're a good year, probably a good buy, and value also. Just overpowered by the presence of the 63 and 65 mystiques. Either there's not many 64 guys around the NDB or they don't use the books (maybe they don't have to).

Also, there's a 64 KO response above by Mike. His info is that they have no paint. TBarr #24014
