Thus far, I've removed the passenger side dash panel but the service manual also says to "remove the radio and center dash console". Is this really necessary?

Re: C3 Heater Core Removal
Unfortunately yes it is necessary to do so as to be able to remove the heater box. I do not know what year you are working on but if it is 68-76 be very careful with the center guage bezel. They break very easy at the thin section near the top.Dick Whittington- Top

Re: C3 Heater Core Removal
Jack, just a heads up, years ago I replaced my heater core on my 69 with out A/C. I didn't know that it was supposed to come out with the heater box so I just removed the blower motor housing in the engine bay and removed it that way. Yes it was tight coming out and going back in but nothing I can remember was damaged in the process. Just some food for thought before you rip out your dash.- Top

Re: C3 Heater Core Removal
Jack if your C3 does not have air conditioning, removal of the radio and center dash console may not be required. Having an air-conditioned Corvette there is more air ducts behind the radio to provide the cool air to the drivers and passenger side vents and to the center cool air vent as well as the defroster vent in the top dash. The center guage panel has at the bottom of the guage panel two studs that go through the console and each have a (3/8 inch if memory is accurate) nut with attached star type washer. I used 1/4 extensions and was able to get mine off of my 70. As difficult as it was to get them off I have not put mine back on yet, my personal preference since I have owned the car since new. When I have to change the heater core in my 68 without air I do not plan on removing the radio and center guage panel, but not having to replace it yet I will do what is required when the time comes. On the engine firewall side there is one maby two nuts that will have to be removed to the heater core.- Top
