The rear flange "HI PERF" casting on my 1966 3869942 Block appears somewhat flawed. The letter "H" does not have the horizontal line joining the two vertical lines and the vertical lines are farther apart than one would expect. The casting date is B16. Has any one else noted this flaw?

I have seen many Feb 942 blocks and most if not all have not had the flaw you mention. I believe the block casting letters/numbers were a bit rough in many - so it may be that your block just happened not to come out of the mold not "spot on" for that lettr. Do all the other casting symbols and numbers on your block look OK and did you view them free from paint - i.e. virgin cast iron?- Top

I am very familiar with the SB casting process; Tonawanda and Grey Iron were both Chevrolet foundries. If the HI PERF characters were required it had to be on the casting and exactly in that area on the rear housing flange. The bronze letters were either soldered directly onto the pattern or soldered to a tag and screwed to the pattern. So, if you happen to run out of “H’s” then you file down some “I’s” and fabricate and “H”. The patterns are used to make the part impression in compacted sand molds. It kept the line running and Chevrolet was happy.
