    few questions on C3 restoration

    Body off restor. on a '72 LS5 M40

    1. There are parts of the chassis that are suppose to be left natural. Will I get points deducted if I clear coat them?

    2. I am replaceing my ball joints. The ones I bought are the typical aftermarket joints, they are flat on top. I will be rivitting them in. Because they are not cosmeticaly like the OEM will I get points deducted?

    3. I would like to get the frame and other frame parts powder coated. From a judging standpoint is this OK? Or do should I just get it painted?

    4. Lastly, I am looking for someone to rebuild my original brake calipers back to speck, paint and all. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

    Thank you,
    Brandon

Yes on all accounts if the judges can determine what you have done.

      Wayne,
Thank you for the responce. My next question then is how do I protect the parts that are left "natural" from becomeing....weathered, aged, rusty, etc. I am putting all this time into getting it looking like new I would hate to wash the car a few times and have humidity start to change what I have done over the course of a single summer.

        Brandon------

Other than the use of a clear coat (a satin finish may or may not be detectable), the only way to keep "natural" finish steel or iron parts from corrosion is to apply a protectant like "Pre Lube 6". This material has to be re-applied from time-to-time.

Most of the brake caliper rebuilders will rebuild and return your original calipers if you so choose. However, most now charge an additional fee for this service. Also, you can ask them to leave the castings bare and then paint them yourself with very low gloss black.
