    Re: date

    Should be 251st day of 1970; early September. Early '71 carb.

            Lyndon,

            It is a carburetor for a 1971 MY vehicle. The 4th number indicates the model year it is applicable to.

            7041205 = 1971 365 HP, LS5, 4-speed.
            0251
            The first three numbers are the Julian day of the year 025 = January 25
            The last number is the year -- in this case, 1971

            BTW: ALL the above information except the first paragraph is in the 1970-71 TIM&JG, plus a whole lot more. Go for it. I cheated and looked it up.

              Re: date

              I don't realy have any input on this but a question on my own carb. I have a '72 Jan. built LS5 M40. I obtained a carburator with the following numbers. I believe it is for a '72 with the date I am looking for but I would like to double check before I spend the money to get it rebuilt.

              Numbers are 7042220 J1 EM

              I is a Quadrejet manufactured by Carter.

              Thanks for the input.

                Cheat, like Terry did.....

                and look the info up in the Judging Guide! You'll find it documents a difference between the date coding sequence for Rochester produced QJets and those from Carter. While Rochester units use an all numeric Julian dating system, Carter units use an alphameric system....

                The 'J1' decodes to September, 1971. The JG book will also tell you Judges expect to see a 7042216 QJet atop the intake of a '72 LS5, automatic, Corvette. Therefore, while the carb might be dated 'right' why put a lot of effort into getting a carb core that's not original to your engine rebuilt unless your intention is to simply drive the car....
