Pertronix Ignition & Lectric Limited Wires

Thinking about installing a Pertronix ignition set-up on my '66 L36. I'm wondering if the flimsy (and fairly new) Lectric Limited wires I'm using will stand up to the extra oomph. Also, is an upgraded coil necessary?

    Dan...

Your existing coil will work just fine. If the wire gauges are the same as original,( I believe Lectric Limited wires are) they will work also. The only extra "oomph you should get is if you install a 40,000 volt Coil.

Check the archives, but a short and sweet answer is unless you are having the car judged, use a set of MSD Spiralcore or equivelent wires. There are several coils that have more output than the original. You might be surprised at the improvement in running by making these changes. Installed a MSD 6AL, Blaster 2 coil, and the spiralcore wires on a big block and picked up the idle speed over 300 rpms. Had new GM wires and replacement GM coil.

The insulation on the GM and Lectric Limited wires is marginal. The wires are prone to "leak" voltage when they get a few miles on them. As far as I am concerned all they are good for is judging, but not daily driving and sure not a performance item

Absolutely agree on the longevity issue with those LL plug wires; as a new owner wanting to put everything "correct" I immediately put the properly dated wires on, and within 500 miles a run rough condition presented itself, traced to arcing plug wires where one had been exposed to a slightly hotter area. Got a good set of plug wires in plain black, don't look out of the ordinary and you can go dated for judging . . .

Pertonix igntion (on it's own) does not give you any extra 'oomph'. It's simply an electronic switch replacing a mechanical switch ie. the points.

Keep in mind these units have a horrible reliabilty record for sudden failure.

              Dan,

About 5 years and 15,000 miles ago I replaced the points system in my car with the Pertronix basic unit ( I think they have two now ) and to date it has been flawless. I did not replace the coil or standard radio resistant plug wires that were on the car when I bought it.

I have been perfectly happy with the breaker points triggering the MSD. No load compared to triggering a coil. Last forever

                        Jack,
what type of wire set did you buy? Were the boots at 90 degrees and the distributor ends straight? Why are they better?
