    Mac,

Below is a thread in the archives, entitled C2:Loose mirror-snap to fix.

The fix I believe is the same for a 68 except for removal of the mirror glass.
I'm told that the 68 mirror glass is attached to mounting frame with adhesive, and that you have to soak it in lacquer thinner overnight or for days to break the bond. (the C2 originals use a snap ring). Once you get the mirror glass off, the procedure is the same as the archive post.

There is also other threads on the subject in late July and early August, 2004.
Just do an archive search for "Loose Mirror". Maybe Jack H, and Terry M. will chime in on this.

        Mac,

Search the January 15, 2004 to Present archives (Mirror Repair, All Terms)...you should be able to gain some insights on your inquiry from there. Also, I had the same problem with my original '74 mirror for which I opted to purchase a date coded replacement. Looks and works just fine. Good luck!

This will work, but you have to be extremely careful removing the mirror glass. It is glued in place. As stated in the post you will have to soak it in lacquer thinner to soften the adhesive. Repair the head as the post describes and use clean silicone to adhere the glass back in the mirror head.

On my 73 I positioned the mirror where I wanted it while on the door, removed the mirror from the door and took it to the work bench, put three drops of 'thin super glue' onto the ball/socket joint from the outside, let the mirror sit for five minutes, then reinstalled the mirror on the door. Stilling staying in place three years later.

Obviously, the only permanent fix is to repair the loose head. However, if you choose a temporary method such as Roger describes, you can have your car back almost immediately and the repair will (should) hold for quite a while. I helped my friend fix his 73's loose mirror using Loktite. Still holding after two years.

thanks gary, i think i'll try the loktite first. the way my luck has been going, i'd probably break the glass trying to remove it. if the loktite doesn't work, i'll try to remove the glass.
