I am restoring a 1966 convertible and a number of the bolts, washers and nuts call for a natural finish. I have tried wire brushing, glass bead blasting and oiling and cann't get the right look. Was there an inhibitor or coating place on machined metal for its appearance. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Natural Finish on Bolts
Try dropping your nuts, bolts, etc. in muratic acid. the bath will make them brand new. Then quickly immerse them in water with some bakeing soda mix, to neutralize the acid. To finish , spray with protective oil or clearcoat with dull clear. Bob- Top

I've tried Muriatic/baking soda with very little success, especially on deep rust. The best I have come up with is to sand blast them, which leaves them a very dull light gray, and then buff them on the wire wheel which makes them darker and removes most of the dullness. At this point, they look pretty good. I then coat them with Nialic or black oxide. The down side of this coating is that Nialic is too shinny and black oxide is too dull/dark and poor rust protection. What's a feller to do?

Re: Natural Finish on Bolts
I was a little hasty with my earlier response and I apoligize. I tried the muriatic acid again and this time I let the rusty parts soak overnight. It made a world of difference. Thanks for the tip. I'll try the 'satin' clear when I get back from Florida. BTW, Orlando was great.- Top
