Ebay scam question

I am curious how I won an Item on Ebay by the exact amount of my overbid. It was a very odd amount and with 4 more bids from $65.00 up to my $152.00 plus winning bid. I find it curious that it managed to get to my overbid right to the penny. A bidder would have had to bid just enough under my overbid to see my winning bid and then decide not to spend another couple bucks. I wasn't able to observe the final minutes of the auction. I'm getting the part for what I was willing to pay, It just seemed odd.

Usually the bids go up in steps. For instance, less than $200 is by $1 increments or whatever, so if your max was $105.52 and the next bidder bid $100, you would win for $101. But if he bid $105, then your max of $105.52 would win.

Thats what I thought. So he would then know that he hit my max and could out bid me with another 1.50. He was over $150.99 and under $152.48 when he saw my max bid was $152.49 and decided not to bid another buck fifty, unless he just happened to bid exactly $150.99, (with 3 bids from $66) then he would assume I was higher. Like I said, I just found it odd.

Thanks, thats the answer. He waited until the last minute and was going up and hit $151.00 and didn't have time to place another bid. I learned that lesson on my very first Ebay bid. If you want it, bid what you are willing to pay.

FWIW, here's my theory on Ebay bidding: If you're bidding the maximum that you're willing to pay, it makes no difference when you bid. That works for less rare items. For rare items you just can't live without, decide the max you will bid and then snipe at the last second; "sneaking up" with incremental bids usually does not work, especially if there are several bidders interested.
