wiper O-Ride is on (68 conv.)

I just removed my center console on my 68. After reinstalling it I some how caused the wiper-oride lite to come on, also when I start it the wiper door opens but the wipers don't work. Does this sound like a bad wiper switch? I didn't remove it but I did loosen the screws and drop it down when I was working on getting the console out. I looked at the wireing dia. it dosen't look like any wires would be any ware near the center cosole. If any one has any advice were to start I would sure be thankful.

When you turn off the ignition does the wiper door go down on its own? Does it stay up thoughout the driving of the car? If I read your msg correctly, you did not disconnect the wiper switch from the electrical connector when you removed the center console? Did you remove the center guage panel or the center console where the shifter is located?

Jim the door stays open. I never took the switch loose but I thought I had to remove the gauges so I took out the screws and loosened the gauge cluster. I never took it out but the top were the switch was was hanging down. I did remove the entire center console were the shifter is but I didn't see any wires that I thought were related to the wipers, just the heater fan lighter etc. Thanks for any help.

Wiper door works via vacuum! One vac switch that causes the wiper door to open and stay open is beneath the steering column and it's function is documented in your copy of the car's owner manual (allows the door to stay up so you can change wiper blades).

The second vacuum switch controlling the wiper door is an electro-vacuum relay. This is mounted to rear of the tachometer and electrically connected to the center console WSW switch. When you turn the WSW switch ON, that triggers the tach mounted vac relay to instruct the wiper door to open.

The vac circuit is pretty simple...any 'vent' condition on either of the two control relays (could happen if a vac hose was inadvertently disconnected) will cause the wiper door to open and stay open until the venting condition is stopped/plugged.

First thing I can suggust is to start the car and since you confirmed the door stays open, just turn on the wipers with the car running and then return the switch to off with the car running. If this does not activate the wipers and stop them I would then open the hood and depress the electrical switch to the right of the vacuum cannister that raises the wiper door. This switch activates the electrical wiper motor. It function is to not let the wipers work before the wiper door is completely open.

The wiper motor ground wire is attached to the center gauge bezel. If you loosened/removed that wire the wiper motor will not work. Also, if your center bezel is broken in the usual places(upper thin area), you will need to find another ground.

                            CAUTION Red Rider

The purpose of the "wiper o'ride" light on some 1968 Corvettes is to alert the driver that the round knob under the steering column (or to the right of it if you have a very early car) is rotated to remove the ground to the wiper motor. Try turning that knob before you do anything else. If that does not turn off the light, turn it back to the first position and chase the missing ground. It may have been interrupted at the center instrument console, I just don't know where it goes.

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES LEAVE YOUR BATTERY CONNECTED WHILE THIS LIGHT IS ON UNLESS YOU ARE WITH THE CAR.

There is a chance that the ungrounded wiper motor will overheat and catch fire. The 1968 wiper circuit is a one year only design because of this, but I caution any 1968-1972 Corvette owner NEVER to leave the wiper system (any part of it, even just the door) partially actuated. NEVER shut off the engine with the wipers on the windshield without disconnecting the battery unless you intend to remain with the car during the time the wipers are on the windshield.
