    AIM part numbers

C1/1961 How do I cross refference the part numbers from the AIM? Is there a book I can purchase that indicates what these numbers represent?

    Re: AIM part numbers

    Richard,
I offer for free to all who have asked, a database of the 1961 AIM. It allows searches by part name or part number, it lists all locations of where that particular part is used. Th databases are done in Microsoft's Windows Access database software and is required to view and use.

Donald # 17357 Thank you for your response to my question about how to cross refference the AIM numbers to a parts book. Where do I get this information from that you mentioned?

            Re: AIM part numbers

            Richard,

The AIM's had many part numbers that were never actually available for service. Probably at least one third, or more, of the numbers that you find in these AIM manuals were assembly line only part numbers for several different reasons. Fasteners, for example, were almost all unique to the assembly line and those found in the standard parts books from the dealer parts dept are seldom the same number. Most are generic replacements, even during a current model year.

There were many part numbers in the AIM that would be used for an assembly, such as a complete differential with brakes. This part would never have been available in service so the part number for that assembly would never have been printed in any parts book used for service.

The remaining part numbers from the AIM that actually were available in service were the actual numbers in the parts books. There was no conversion from assy line part number to service part number so such a book doesn't exist.

If you happen to have a 1961 copy of the parts book, you would find many of the numbers listed are the same as the 1961 AIM but as the years went by, many of those numbers changed to a different number for one reason or another. If a part design changed for the 62 model year and the new part could also be used to service the 61, the new number would be in the 62 printing of the parts book and would include the 61.

There is, and never was, one single book that lists all of the part number changes over the years. The dealers were issued update pages from time to time and at least once every few years, there was a book that listed all of the changes but generally these only covered a five year span. Finding part number change books from that many years ago would be very difficult. Hope this helps,

            Michael
