Paint experts need advice take a look.

I am more of a mechanical and electrical guy, when it comes to paint I am lost. The original owner decided to put a rubber molding on the side of the car in 1976 to "protect" the car. He sanded the paint so it would stick real good. I have removed the molding without loosing any paint, but its needs touch up. It is original lacquer paint, so matching and painting the least amount of the door as possible is my goal. I bought a craftsman touch up air gun for the project. What do you think? Use lacquer? PPG? How should I sand it? What grit? How do I do this and make it look correct?

I would not paint it yourself. It is a simple repair and good painter should be able to repair it for very few bucks. If it is laqure, I would try to find some to match. They may want to paint the whole door though. Let someone do it right. Save the hassle. Just my opinion. Terry

In my area (southern california) there are many auto "touch-up" companies that will come to your house to repair areas like yours, as well as bumper scratches, dents, etc. They can custom mix paint color on the job. Check your yellow pages, you might be surprised what you'll find. Unless you're really good with paint, the problem area usually ends up bigger than it was when you started.

                Jim,

I agree with Terry & Bob. If you haven't used the gun yet Sears will take it back and spend the money towards the repair. There is a learning curve to painting and doing a proper repair. I do not know your abilities but I do know this isn't something you want to practice on.

I hate to jump on the band wagon but I do some paint and body work and trust me what you want to do is alot harder then it looks. First just to finish the edges with out seeing the chips you'll have to feathure the edges pretty far. Then after you try to match the color you would need to blend which means you'll have to light sand out from repair. Don't mean to be neg. but please don't learn to paint on this, start on someones geo...

I had body and paint damage on 2 separate occasions to my 20 year old Roman Red lacquer painted '62. Both times the body shop had somebody come out with a "photo-spec-something-or-other meter"; took some readings; and, then were able to match the paint perfectly. Both times they painted the whole panel, though. Both repairs are perfect. You've got to find a body shop that will do lacquer.

The car has chips all over it 40 years of wear and tear, and the paint is not perfect elsewhere on the car. That is why a touch up job doesn't have to be perfect. The car will need to be painted in its future life sometime. So I figured I would give it a shot on the touch up. But, If it cant be done then I guess it cant be done.
