    Tank sticker access....

Is there any way to get to the tank sticker (I don't even know if if still has it) on my '72 coupe without removing the tank?

    Thanks,

    Re: Tank sticker access....

Bob I can understand your desire to see how your 72 Corvette was built at the factory. I have read about this and did it several years ago just to see if there in fact was build sheets attached to the tanks of our 68 and 70. Since these are original owner cars I didn't have the desire to drop the tank just to see the sticker, especially since I saved the window sticker from my 70. To verify that the sticker is still in place you can first remove the gas lid assembly. Clean out the rubber water drain and remove the gas cap. You can smear some vasoline around the filler neck to help in removing the rubber water catcher. There should be a drain hose attached to the nipple or drain outlet. In a dark garage and a bright small light look to the left of the filler neck and see what you can see. I have never tried it, but an mirror attached to extension device might be helpful. If your or someones hand and arm is small enough you might be able to feel that something is there. If you try to remove it the tank sticker without removing the gas tank from the car, it is unlikely that you will remove anything usuable and what information that is still legibile will be destroyed. If you have your original protect-o-plate a lot of your cars documented information is obtained from it. If you don't have it, mayby a search through the owners could turn it up. Good luck.

      Bob,

JAT has described exactly the way to check for the build sheet that may still be attached to your tank. However, should you find it, my additional opinion and suggestion would be that you remove and preserve it. Since they are considered an important piece of documentation for your car, to leave it in place would only allow for it's future deterioration and eventual loss. TBarr #24014

        Bob,

As a side note, the sticker on my 71 was on the RIGHT hand side, vs. the typical left. Both mine and my Dad's 72 were removed recently. Mine was beyond recognition, and on Dad's all you can read is "Corvette Order Copy."

In addition, I actually could feel mine by getting under the car and reaching up ahead of the gas tank and over onto the gas tank top. While my arms aren't small, they're long enough for this trick.

          Re: Tank sticker access....Thanks!

Thanks for responding guys. I'll try to see it through the cap assy.

By the way, I've heard of the "protect-o-plate" but what is it? (I have a feeling that if I have to ask then I probably don't have it, eh?)

              Been there recently

I hate to admit to this, but here goes. The week after Christmas I couldn't resist the temptation to pull the gas cap and filler neck off the 69 I bought 2 weeks before. Once I got into it and shined a light in I could see the sticker right there on the left hand side of the tank. Being the patient, calm person I am I quickly recognized the temptation to try to peel the sticker off without dropping the tank. I was able to resist the temptation right up until I found a very thin, clean putty knife and started to work. The top half pulled up easily. Half way down there was a big glob of blue which was nearly impossible to get loose. I ended up with the top half in almost one piece and 3 or 4 smaller pieces for the bottom half. There was a good sized chunk of the sticker that looked like it had disintergrated because I could not see it on the tank. If you look hard at the sticker you can make out the 427 and A/C which were my big concerns.

If at all possible, drop the tank. Until I do I'll never know for sure if part of the sticker is still on there. Also there is no way to get it off in one piece.
