    Original lacquer care

My 65 coupe has its original factory lacquer paint (Ermine white) still in very good condition. I have read many company claims about paint maintenance, but what products and technicques do the NCRS oldtimers recommend?

    Thanks,

    Dwight

One popular product is Meguiars Show Car Glaze #7. Available in 16 oz containers and is a liquid. This is a polish that feeds/nourishes the paint. Apply it according to directions on container. It can used alone or you can protect the paint adding Meguiars Mirror Glaze #26 solid form wax to protect the paint. Both of these products are usually available at Auto Zone, Advance Auto, as well as other automotive part stores.

Thanks for the advice. How about Zymol products? There are some very impressive testamonials about the quality of their products.

            Re: Original lacquer care

Lacquer continues to loose solvents over its life, which causes it to shrink and build up stress. This will eventually result in cracking and crazing.

Keeping the paint "sealed" with a quality carnuba wax and covering it with a good solar reflective cover when it's parked in the sun is your best defense.

I wouldn't get to hung up on brand names - just use a quality carnuba wax product. Read the labels and product information, and try to filter out the marketing hype from the science. Any dulling can be polished out with a fine polishing compound as required, but only use if necessary.

With so few original lacquer jobs left, I think you should preserve it, The paint may not be "show quality", but they are only original once.

                Dwight,

Another good product to clean and feed paint is 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. I find it easier to work with than the Meguiar. products and I follow it with a pure carauba paste wax.

Wayne's recommendation is very good. I have used the 3M Hand Glaze for years with good results. Is not bad to leave swirl marks either. Like Duke said, just a good PURE carnuba wax. Do not use the polish/wax combination products. If it does not require a little sweat from the owner, it probably isn't any good?

The only product to have ever touched my 66 rally red conv. since it was restored 10 years ago is Liquid Glass....and I can tell you it shines like nothing you've ever seen before for a car that is driven often....over 60,000 miles. It also has very few stone chips because, I believe, after may coats over the years the surface is well protected. Even gasoline spills do not affect the paint. I highly recommend.
