    C2 ENGINE REBUILD REQUIREMENTS

I'm lookin at a '66 small block(350HP) with around 81,000 miles on it. The engine has had no work done to it. A compression check was done recently with good results and the plugs show no indication of oil burn. I plan to use it as a driver on a daily basis. I don't recall how many miles these engines were expected to go before needing a rebuild, with normal preventative maintenance. I'm assuming that 100,000 would have been considered good back in the '60's Realistically, how many many miles could I expect to put on before to having to do some degree of rebuild to the engine.

    Rob,

Maintaince is the key word here and also in every small block or big block on the face of the earth.

Nobody knows so you are rolling the dice!

Example: Oil and Filter Changed every 2000 miles and never overheated or abused-- 100,000 plus

Oil and Filter Never Changed, Overheated and Abused--Ready to pop anytime!

    Regards,

    JR

drop the pan and see if it is sludged up and if everything is clean you are good to go. the oil pump pickup screen need to be clean and if it is you should not have a problem for a long time. you can also remove the rocker covers also to check for sludging

I am still driving my original owner 68 327/350 with 95,000 + miles. It is still running strong with only many oil and filter changes since new.

One of the things we don't often think about is why unleaded fuel is so good...Its clean! I had a 327 that was stored away since the 70's. It came out of a 67 Camaro and never saw unleaded fuel. One look into those exhaust ports told the story with all kinds of build up all over those valves. Well all those deposits also went right in the oil too. So while the lead controled the burn and kept the valves cool it also took its toll on the engine life.
