    Message for Gary Beaupre

Gary, I sent you some photos of the original keys to my 67 which I'm sure are the the real thing. Well, after talking to you and others by email I found that two sets were delivered to the buyer. I contacted the original owner asking if he had a second set and two months later he called me and said he had found some keys, read me the numbers and they were the same ones with knockout in. I got them last night and they are like new. I forgot to measure the hole size but will and will send you a photo if you like. Never would have gotten them without your survey.
    Best regards,
    John McRae

    John; got your msg

    John,

Thanks for the news. My current e-mail address is beaupre@va51.stanford.edu. The best way to measure is to do a go-no go test using the non-working end of some drill bits, which works if you have a set of bits in 1/64" increments. I don't need a photo.

            Key survey update

            Brian,

To date, I've received 272 responses; 83% from owners of cars from '53 to '67 and 17% from '68-'82 car owners. I'd still like to hear from some more '68-'82 owners. Also, I only have a grand total of 6 responses from owners of '54 thru '56 and no responses at all from '53 owners. Maybe no '53 owners still have original keys?

In terms of results, roughly 90% match up with the dogma that existed prior to the survey; 53-67 keys have the large hole; 68-82 keys have the small hole. I have to say, though, that a small minority of owners have convincing stories that the keys they have that don't fit the dogma are in fact original, i.e., a small hole key for a '67 or earlier car and a large hole key for a '68 or later car. But the results show this is not the norm.

A "story" for the Restorer is certainly planned, but it's not going to be earthshattering. After all, how much can one say about a hole in a key.

            Gary

Thanks for the update. I will speak with Alan Blay regarding the 53 keys. I'm sure that he'll know something.
