My '68 vette has an L-T1 hood on it. The original hood support for the stock hood was modified by the previous owner to fit the L-T1 hood but they did not do a good job and the hood support is not safe to use. I ordered another one from Ecklers but it's for the stock hood. The bracket support holes in the hood now, do not align with the hood support end. What I need is for someone with an L-T1 hood on a '68 to give me the measurement(total length) of the inner "C" channel on their hood support. That way I can modify a longer style bracket to fit. Any other work arounds or solutions would also be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 1968 Corvette Convertable - hood support
Bob, Thanks for the quick response. I believe it is a small block. It has an Edlebrock performer alum intake manifold and 750 cfm 4bbl on it that was put on the car by the previous owner. The previous owner passed away and the family sold it to me. They do not know what was done to the engine but said there was extensive work done to it. They also do not know what hp it is. I think it started out as 327/300. It has three speed stock tranny. Anyway, they cut away the top portion of the hood support and installed a brass bolt so you can open the hood and push the bolt through the hole in the support to attach it to the bracket that is screwed to the hood. I just assumed that they put the big block hood on it because of the manifold height, then had to modify the hood support to fit. The new hood support I have, will not line up with the existing bracket. If I move the hood bracket up and remount it, then it will fit but I will not be able to raise the hood far enough to engage the safety catch in the hood support. I'm puzzeled to say the least.- Top

Re: 1968 Corvette Convertable - hood support
Dave----
You many have the 1972 LS-5/LT-1 hood or you may have a later GM SERVICE hood. I think that the later GM SERVICE hoods had dual mounting locations for the hood support, but, since you, apparently, don't have these, I would expect that you have a 1972 PRODUCTION hood (or, a very early SERVICE hood).
In 1972 the hood support was changed and, I believe, the location of the hood support attachment was also changed as Patrick mentioned in another post. The 1968-71 hood support was a "telescoping" style; the 72+ was a "jack-knife" style.
The 68-71 hoods had a dimension MEASURED FROM THE CENTER OF THE FORWARDMOST HINGE ATTACHMENT BOLT HOLE TO THE CENTER OF THE FORWARDMOST HOOD SUPPORT ATTACHMENT BOLT HOLE OF 15-1/4". What is this dimension on your hood?
If you have the 72+ style hood, you can use the 72+ hood support, GM #3996865, and this should solve your hood support problem. Of course, it won't be "correct", but it will be 100% functional. This hood support is GM-discontinued, but it's available in reproduction for about 60 bucks. I don't think that there's any other way to solve your hood support problem. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1968 Corvette Convertable - hood support
Joe:
Thanks for the info. I measured the old support that the previous owner modified and it is exactly the measurement you satated 15 1/4". However, it's not safe to use in it's present consition. So, I think I'll get the 72+ hood support and install it as you suggested. Thank you and everyone else who responded to my question. Take care.- Top
