Joe I guess you are talking about the back side of the slotted section? at a glance it looks square ,but the squared off corner has a slight radius. The silver very well could have been zinc .

Re: Scan of 1966 big block spark plug heat shields
Michael------
This is the configuration with the "squared-off" end. I was referring to the end of the "cut-out" which is adjacent to the bracket. On the 3868828 this surface is supposed to have a modest radius to it. On the 3871266 it's supposed to be "squared off" (like this one). Both shields have the radiused corners at the rear of the "cut-out".
How long is this shield overall? If it's 2-1/2", then it's configured just like a 3871266 except for length. If it's 3", then it's configured exactly the way a 3871266 is supposed to be.

Re: Scan of 1966 big block spark plug heat shields
Ok, thanks Joe, I was confused. So, this then would be the correct design for most 65-66 applications? I assumed it would be the 2nd design because it was from a 66.

Michael----
Then what you have is the GM 3871266 exactly as it's supposed to look. This would be the "2nd design" assuming that the "1st design" was the GM #3868828 and that that piece was ever actually manufactured and used.
I do have the print, but I don't know how to post it. No matter, though, as I've just discovered the print for BOTH shields also happens to be in Noland Adams' book on page 285.
