If I had access to my books, I could tell you the exact use, but from memory:
1705 - placed in service after 1976 but prior to '80 (could be either an M4MV or a 4MV)
4 - for use on a 1974 model year vehicle
9 - California emissions for Chevrolet, and possibly a chevrolet truck
17 - Applications indication, can't tell you the engine size or what other criteria applied (same engine w or w/o AC could change this designation) without my Rochester book, but it is likely for a manual transmission vehicle (last # 0dd - manual, Even - auto, in most cases)
But this is probably not a production carb, however a service carb only. The give away? Rochester did not begin adding the 1 to start the model number until '76, and the 4 is the year designator. If the carb was for an '84 then the fourth digit would be different, probably an 8, therefore it a service replacement for a '74.
