    C3 chrome bumper alignment

I am looking at at 1972 coupe for potential purchase. The front bumper on the driver side appears to be 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch higher than the passenger side. Should I be looking for damage from a front end hit or is this a misadjustment that could be corrected? Right now I have only seen emailed pics but I don't expect it to go away in person. Seeking comments from the guys who have "been there and done that". Thanks, current Vette is plastic on both ends.

I own a 68, but it's stored away now, so I can't look, but I don't recall any adjustment. I could be wrong, so wait for others to reply.

It could be either damage or just misadjustment. I would look for fiberglass repairs, bent frame horns, core support damage, excessive shimming of core support or hood. I think that I would want the car on a lift for inspection before purchase.

Mike, I am doing a bodyoff on a 72 convertible and basically have seen every nook and cranny of this car. To me, the front bumper placement/alignment is a function of where the outboard body bumper hole (in the fiberglass) ends up! If it is significantly high then dropping the bumper down means that the fender (outboard front) has to come down. Radical adjustment may not be achievable (ie, bumper extension angles, down flexing of the fender and inner skirt, maybe the front frame rail was bent up, or maybe a poor fender repair, ect).

Maybe you could measure the height of the bolt centers on both lower control arms to see if they are even. If they are even, then you could make additional measurments up front on both sides to see where things start changing from side to side. Sorry if this hasn't helped you figure things out.
