    Purchasing '71 LT 1 Convertible

Need some help in purchasing this car, body is in great shape, not painted in correct color, interior redone and very clean, has both tops, numbers match not every part but the main ones do, low miles that are probably not accurate, recent on body restoration motor, interior, some suspension, exhaust, tires. I am a stingray lover but want to check out the shark. Need tips, info, any knowledge that can be offered. Have to make a quick decision and time is if the essence. Price is 15,ooo with history of last 15 years. Is price to much ? All help would be appreciated and hopefully one day can be returned.

    Bobby,

As always, frame and birdcage corrosion play a major factor in buying a Shark. You may want to search the archives to see all the discussions and advice that has gone on regarding this subjest.

If this car is relatively corrosion free, and has the major components intact $15K actually sounds low- might want to find out why.

In addition to what Mike said, also check (as close as possible) the windshield frame for rust as well as radiator support and frame crossmember that is bolted to the front frame horns below the rad. support. On the windshield frame, if there is rust, sometimes you can see it through the windshield in the lower driv. side corner near vin. plate. Rust is also common along the top of the windshield frame but is virtually impossible to see without removing the windshield and/or interior header pieces. You have to roll the dice on that one.

      Good Luck,

        Re: Why the quick decision?

That's one I wouldn't make when purchasing one. There's a new "deal" everyday. May work to your advantage to wait. For $15,000 I don't think it will be the "one-that-got-away". TBarr #24014

one year ago i purchased a 71 LS5 4spd that had new paint and a rebuilt motor. the car looked like it needed nothing, I paid $15,800 I have managed to put $7,000 into it. I am now running out of things to do and have to much money into it.Keep this in mind when paying the price they are asking, you can easily have $25,000 into it when its done.

With all respect due, That Shark says Stringray on the side.

              It says What?

              Jerry,

"Stringray?" Yours must be a unique model to say that on it, shark or no shark.

Last time I checked, the 71 and 72 in the garage said Stingray. :)

Hey Patrick, I REALLY did that. Fat fingers, little keys, bad eyes, no spell checker, late in the evening, out of coffee, nervous about Orlando, no sex in the last.....

Also with all due respect, none of the 63-67 era say Mid-Year, either. Wait, there's a C5 outside, let me go look at that one!
