    '62 clutch cross shaft spring

    Guys,
Anyone have an easy simple way to reassemble the big clutch cross shaft spring while in the car on a 62. Us mid year guys are not used to this set up.
    thank you

Gene, I have not tried this yet but this is what I have been told. With one end of the spring attached bend the spring and insert big flat washers between the coils. Keep bending and inserting washers till the spring is the length you need. After the spring is installed push the clutch pedal in and all the washers will fall out. Like I said, I have not tried it yet. Pat G.

        Gene,

I am assuming you are referring to the "Godzilla" spring that goes from the welded frame hook to the 2-hole link that is secured to the 2-hole swivel link at the pivot point of the clutch cross-shaft. If so, you can find out to make a tool for installation in the service manual ST-12. However, someone on Corvetteforum.com has a simpler way to install it that requires the use of wrench and some contortion. You might do a search there in the C1 forums. The spring is installed to ease the pressure needed to release the clutch. I have never used one on my cars, a 59 and a 62, and am not quite sure if it is really all that necessary. For judging, I am sure it is needed, but for everyday driving, I have no need for it. It's a MIGHTY spring for sure. Be careful.

Gene - Check out a Restorer article in the Summer '87 issue by Joe Calcagno. It includes plans for making a cheap simple "turnbuckle-type" tool that worked fine for me. However ya do it, take the appropriate safety measures - it's a bear! Regards, Dick

I can confirm this method works very well...

                    Gene...

I can send a blue print for a very good adaptor that attaches to the cross-shaft assembly and connects a spring to the same frame bracket. I made it up to prevent attaching the spring to the firewall, which works very well also.
