    BRAKE CALIPERS

I have a set of brake calipers that came with my car but i know they are not the original ones. The casting numbers on them are 5473807 and 5473806. also they have what i think are julin dates stamped on them, 315/0x and 284/0x Does this mean they were built in 1970. Can anyone tell from the casting number what kind of car they came off. Also they have been sleeved with stainless steel, What is the proper procedure when rebuilding these? Can you use a hone on them or jsut wash and reseal them? Thanks

    Re: BRAKE CALIPERS

Sheldon, the part numbers you gave are for the third design calipers which were available from early 1972 thru 1982. 5473807 is for the RR outer and 5473806 is for the RR inner. According to Stainless Steel Brake Corporation's manual the metal GM used to cast the third design pieces was inferior to the previous metal and tended to crack and or leak more frequently. I have yet to figure out the casting date codes as the examples I have seen don't have dates that are consistent with the casting production dates.Any stamped in marking indicates the date of assembly but is rarely readable.Alot of times the company that sleeved your units can be identified by their own logo(ie VB in a circle for Vette Brakes). If the sleeves are in good shape they can often be rebuilt with the use of new seals or as an exchange to the original rebuilder. Hope this helps.Kieran
