    1958 speedo questions

    2 questions:

I'm in the market for a restored '58 speedo... recently I saw 2 for sale... one had the needle that reached completely to the "dots" just like my original. Another was about a half-inch shorter. The seller said it was a "replacement" needle and the correct was no longer available. Anyone ever hear this one before?

I'm seeing prices all over the map, for full restorations & etc. Outright prices for complete units with no core are as high as $650. '58 units are not usually laying around and ready to go, so I'm not sure of the market. Opinions?

I spent over $500.00 to have my tach and speedometer rebuilt and I had already done the cosmetics. $600 to $650 is probably not a bad price, IF you can get it directly from a reputable restorer. I'm happy with work on all of my gauges from Corvette Specialies of Maryland.
I can't imagine trying to restore a C1 that is not mostly complete. The original parts that aren't reproduced are sky high and rising.

Thanks... reportedly, the speedo with the "short" needle was done by Corvettes Spec of Maryland. Anyone ever hear of Virginia Vettes Restoration?

The correct needle for the 58-62 is available in repoduction. Some restorers use the needle from the 56-57 chevy and that's probably what you have for a correct needle. For $500-600 bucks you should have received the correct part. My opinion for what it's worth!

sure you're not thinking of vintage vettes, neil russell, woodbridge, va. he's been restoring guages for near 20 years. excellent work but his plate is so full, turn around time probably won't help ya if you're close to being finished with the vette. mike

Nope... Virginia Vettes in Willamsburg, VA. Seems to be a lot of restorers in this area. He has a website and a bunch of feedback on ebay.
I was looking for a stand-alone unit to intall rather than a resto.

So which needle is correct for '59-'62, long or short? By "dots" does that mean the dots way up past the slashes? Just got my speedo back from D&M and the needle extends just to the slashes. Pat G.
